The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released the Estimated Resident Population for Local Government areas today, which has shown that Murray Shire Council was the fastest growing Local Government area in NSW from 2005 to 2006.

Murray Shire Council recorded a growth rate of 4.1% to bring its total population to 6998. The Council area has recorded an average annual growth rate over the past five (5) years of 2.6%.

Murray Shire Council has consistently registered in the top 10 of the fastest growing Local Government areas in NSW and this is the first time it has made it to number one.

Murray Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Brian Sharp, said "I am delighted with the result, which basically confirms what we have known about our wonderful area for a long time."

Greg Murdoch, General Manager of Murray Shire Council said "The result is very pleasing, however, I still believe that ABS has still underdone the real situation." He added "the result also provides some interesting statistics for the town of Moama where most of the growth is taking place, giving it a growth rate of nearly 6% per annum."

The Murray Shire has enjoyed significant growth and development over the years. Some of the more recent major developments include the Moama Anglican Grammar School, Major Tourist Developments, Woolworths Shopping Complex, 80,000 head Feedlot, continued industrial expansion and residential development expansion.
