New Life for Caldwell Sunday School

Last modified: November 19, 2009 - 10:24 PM

New life has been breathed into the old Sunday School building at Caldwell, thanks to Murray Shire and the local community. Their combined efforts have seen the disused McKindlay Hall Sunday School building transformed into a meeting room/children’s play area along with toilet facilities. It has been connected to the main hall building with a walkway, allowing elderly and disabled access.

While church services at Caldwell have now ceased, the community remains strong and the upgraded facility compliments the frequently-used main hall, which plays host to weekly Tai Chi and Nordic Pole Walking activities, as well as regular meetings of the Caldwell Ladies’ Guild, Deniboota Landholders’ Association, Caldwell Fire Brigade, Caldwell Silo Committee and other community groups.

A gift to the Caldwell community by Don and Rowena McKindlay, the building began its life on the Lawson Syphon construction site. Relocated to Caldwell in 1963, it served the community for several decades, with four Sunday School teachers and 30 to 40 children using the facility in its prime. Early teachers included Mrs Val McKecknie and Miss Minnie Cunningham, with Nell Robb, Louise Goudie, Claire Crooke and Rowena McKindlay also teaching for many years.

The McKindlays’ children, Shirley Durrant and Jamie McKindlay, were on hand to open the renovated building in October before Councillors and community members.
