Is Your Number Up?

Last modified: November 19, 2009 - 10:24 PM

You may not be a ‘numbers’ person, but numbers are important, especially if they relate to your address – and an emergency! Valuable time can be lost by ambulances, fire engines and other emergency vehicles if your property is not clearly marked. Your life, or the life of others you love could hinge on you having a prominent house number or farm identification.

Council can make street identification numbers a condition of approval for new developments, but it can only encourage owners of existing properties to act responsibly and ensure they are adequately identified.

For residential properties, 100mm numerals are recommended as a minimum. They should be displayed on the letterbox, as well as near the entry to the building. For rural properties, the rural address number, combined with a property name is sufficient.

Residents should also ensure that the property identification numbering is kept clean and clearly visible. Any foliage obscuring the number from being seen from the street should also be removed.

Numbering your home is not expensive, but it could well pay off in the event of an emergency. Act now!
